Yoga is an ancient Indian discipline with mental, emotional, and spiritual components. Asanas (postures), meditation, and breathing exercises all contribute to its goal of achieving this union. The practice of yoga can be divided into two broad types: Asanas (poses) are central to Hatha yoga, whereas meditation and breathwork are central to Raja yoga. While yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, it wasn't until the 20th century that it gained widespread attention outside of India. This happened when Swami Vivekananda brought yoga to the United States when lecturing on Vedanta philosophy at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. There are many different kinds of yoga practiced today. Some, like Vinyasa flow, involve moving fluidly between poses while holding each pose for a longer period than is customary.
